Radicalized

25 miles from the Syrian border

15 thousand souls

1,000,000 miles from the land of the free

I study at the university

It courses through my veins

Bridges appear as I wave my hand

The day I breathed the soldiers came

Any peace I’ve known is not

What can I think my heart is two

My father taught me right from wrong

And I have my mother’s eyes

I don’t hate I praise Allah

They say I’m radicalized

This city was my teacher

Praying for the sunrise

But the schoolyard was a minefield

Blame the drugs or my parents fighting

Or moving place to place

I never see the sunset

Unlikely date on a cell phone camera

Terrorist or not

I am what you say I am
