New Year’s Song

Nothing changed but everything

So nothing stayed the same

I’d put it all behind me

And shake some of this shame

I stood before the altar once

Resolute and true

Crucified for blowing sins

Absolved me of a few

Kicked a stone on Stephen’s day

Walking up a hill

And the taste of Auld Lang Syne

Bitter as a pill

Carols in the wintertime

Mark another year

I’ll play my part and celebrate

Health and peace and cheer

Rusted words and remnants

Like iron in a cask

Days dilute the nights distill

The questions that I ask

Mulled the whine with Robbie Burns

Listened to him talk

Memories of a mouse inside

His sporran was a hawk
